The Best Time to Visit Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

The weather in the southern Baja is glorious year-round, the beaches and ocean waters are relaxing, and the area's nightlife and restaurants are welcoming. But there are times of the year when special activities, celebrations and fiestas offer additional incentives to visit Cabo San Lucas. Also, visitors who want to avoid the crowds or find a bargain should take a look at the calendar as they plan their visit.

Chances are that the sun is shining in Los Cabos, which consists of the twin communities of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo at the southern tip of Baja. The region gets 350 days of sunny weather a year and the average year-round temperature is 78 degrees F. From late fall to early spring, the daytime average is 80 and nights are in the pleasant 60s -- visitors might even need a sweater or light jacket. From May to September, temperatures are higher and can even reach 100 in mid-summer, falling into the 70s or low 80s at night. But it is a dry heat and not uncomfortable in the shade. The humidity climbs only when tropical storms approach. The Baja gets very little rain -- about 10 inches annually -- but an occasional hurricane does pass over the peninsula during the Pacific storm season from June to mid-November.

Hotel Costs

The resort area's highest prices match the best weather with high season beginning in mid-November and lasting through the end of May. Rates peak and crowds grow for the Christmas and Easter holidays, including the pre-Lenten Carnival celebration, and during spring break, when thousands of college students descend on the the area. Low season runs from June to mid-November.

Annual Events

The calendar is packed with a variety of celebrations, some rooted in Mexican culture, others conjured up to showcase Baja's lifestyle. Traditional festivals like the 11-day, mid-March Fiesta de San Jose del Cabo, honoring the area's patron saint, include parades and fireworks, plus traditional Mexican street food and music. In April, there is a large boat and marine show in Cabo San Lucas showcasing all things nautical, plus food and live entertainment. The Los Cabos Dive Fiesta in August features dive packages and treasure hunts. Los Cabos hosts the Baja Sur Tequila and Mariachi Festival in October, and in December there is a citywide culinary festival, Sabor a Cabo.

Wildlife Attractions

From mid-October to mid-April, the ocean off Los Cabos is home to eight species of whales, including gray whales that migrate 5,000 miles from Alaska to the warm winter waters, affording visitors remarkable whale-watching opportunities. Balmy temperatures also make winter the best time to bird-watch or explore the flora in the surrounding Baja desert. Los Cabos is a world-class sports fishing center home to several top fishing tournaments, including the million-dollar Bisbee's billfish tournament held in mid-summer. Major contests are held every month from May to November.

Christmas in Cabo is a tradition for longtime visitors from north of the border, while many Mexican families head there for the Easter holidays, Semana Santa. In recent years, Carnival, the pre-Lenten celebration, has become a major event -- the date varies according to the church calendar. Dies y Seis, Sept. 15, is Mexico's Independence Day and is marked with fireworks, parades and performances by mariachi bands and folk dancers.
